US forces have sunk an Iranian warship, according to reports. The US military said it has hit the vessel which is "currently sinking to the bottom of the Gulf of Oman".

In a statement, US Central Command said: "An Iranian Jamaran-class corvette was struck by US forces during the start of Operation Epic Fury. As the President said, members of Iran’s armed forces, IRGC and police ‘must lay down your weapons.’ Abandon ship." Hi-res satellite imagery shows billowing smoke rising from a vessel moored at a pier in Konarak on Saturday. It is not yet clear whether that vessel is the Jamaran-class corvette. The port is city located in Iran's south-eastern corner along the Gulf of Oman. The statement has also not specified whether the vessel was part of the Iranian military navy or the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps' naval force.

The warship, known as The Jamaran, or Moudge, class displaces about 1,500 tonnes and is designed for anti-surface, anti-air and anti-submarine operations.

The first vessel in the class entered service in 2010 and is considered one of the most capable warships built domestically for Iran’s navy.

US-Israeli strikes on the country have entered a second day following the killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

A powerful blast hit Tehran early Sunday after Israel said it had launched wide-ranging strikes inside the Iranian capital.

CENTCOM said the vessel was struck as part of coordinated attacks launched on February 28, which targeted Iranian military infrastructure which included command-and-control sites, air-defence systems, missile and drone launch positions, and military airfields.

Iran has not yet confirmed the strike.
