Since 2015 and the outbreak of war between the Houthis, who control the north of Yemen, and the internationally recognised government in the south, the country's education system has been steadily collapsing. According to UNICEF, nearly 4 million Yemeni children are currently out of school, amounting to 40 percent of the under-18 population.
Children and young people in Yemen face daily obstacles that keep them away from classrooms: extreme poverty, the physical destruction of schools, chronic underfunding of the education system and unpaid teachers.

In Aden, the system is largely kept afloat by NGOs and foreign donors, while many teachers work as volunteers in a desperate attempt to avoid sacrificing an entire generation.
