Japan has been rocked by a huge 7.4 earthquake as Sanriku faces severe tremors.

Tsunami warnings have been issued after the earthquake.

Tokyo Electric Power Company is checking whether the earthquake caused any issues at the Fukushima Daiichi and Daini nuclear plants.

Tohoku Electric Power Company is doing the same at the Onagawa plant in Miyagi Prefecture and the Higashidori plant in Aomori Prefecture.

So far, the operator of the Fukushima Daini plant says there are no signs of problems, and radiation levels around the site remain normal.

What has happened?

An earthquake with an initial magnitude of 7.3 has struck off Japan’s coast.

On the country’s own seismic intensity scale, it registered as a 5+, which is considered a strong level of shaking.

The earthquake’s epicentre was located off the Sanriku coast to the east of Japan, at a depth of around 10km.
