Fears of a potential Third World War have intensified after a dramatic escalation of violence in the Middle East. US and Israeli forces launched airstrikes on Iran on Saturday, describing the operation as a “pre-emptive” move against what they claim is Tehran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons.

President Donald Trump said “major combat operations” were under way and urged the Iranian people to “take over your government”, signalling support for regime change. Iran responded with missile strikes reportedly targeting Israel and other countries in the region, including the United Arab Emirates, Qatar and Bahrain — fuelling global concern about how far the conflict could spread. As war spreads across the Middle East, Russia continues its invasion of Ukraine and China continues to threaten Taiwan, it would be understandable for many to be thinking of where they might be safe in the event of a world war.

Ireland

Ireland’s long-standing neutrality and solid internal security record make a safe bet in the event of war with Dublin’s policy of staying out of military alliances reducing the risk of being drawn into geopolitical conflict.

Crucially, Ireland is not a NATO ally, meaning that it would not be compelled to come to the defence of another state in the event it was attacked.

Switzerland

Switzerland’s long-standing neutrality is central to its safety reputation. It has avoided direct involvement in major conflicts for over 200 years.

The country also maintains a strong civil defence infrastructure, including bomb shelters for much of its population. Combined with political stability and strong institutions, this makes it one of the most resilient nations in wartime.

Denmark

Denmark ranks highly for political stability and low crime. Though a NATO member, it is geographically small and socially cohesive, with strong emergency preparedness systems.

Its high trust in government and well-funded public services could help it maintain internal order and resilience during global instability.

Austria is constitutionally neutral and not a NATO member, a status it has maintained since 1955. Its central European location is balanced by a strong diplomatic tradition and internal stability.

With low crime and robust infrastructure, Austria is often viewed as insulated from direct military escalation.
