Donald Trump announced a major move regarding tariffs imposed on the UK shortly after the King and Queen left Washington today. The US President took to his Truth social media account on Thursday and said he would be removing US tariffs and restrictions on whisky “in honour of the King and Queen”.

He added: “The King and Queen got me to do something that nobody else was able to do, without hardly even asking! A wonderful Honor to have them both in the USA.” Mr Trump’s full message was: “In honour of the King and Queen of the United Kingdom, who have just left the White House, soon headed back to their wonderful Country, I will be removing the Tariffs and Restrictions on Whiskey having to do with Scotland’s ability to work with the Commonwealth of Kentucky on Whiskey and Bourbon, two very important Industries within Scotland and Kentucky.

Earlier today, Mr Trump hailed Charles as “the greatest king in my book” as he bade farewell to his royal guests at the White House.

The King and Queen concluded their “wonderful whistle-stop” US state visit by saying goodbye to the President and First Lady and joining a traditional block party in Virginia.

In Washington, the two couples said warm goodbyes outside the South Portico of the White House, with Mr Trump telling the media as they posed for a final photo, “He’s a great king, the greatest king in my book”.

US reporters then leapt on the chance to ask Charles a question. Unused to being heckled by the media, the King hesitated before the President intervened and said: “We’ll talk later.”

The four then headed inside for a brief moment and emerged minutes later, chatting animatedly once more.

There were handshakes, and more kissed goodbye, and as the King’s car pulled away, Mr Trump pointed and said: “Really great people. We need more people like that in our country.”
