A huge fire has engulfed part of Buckeye, Arizona as flames destroy almost 1,000 acres of land. Resdients have described the horror blaze as “like a warzone”.
The fast moving wildfire started on Saturday at around 3pm UTC (11pm BST) near the intersection of Hazen and Rooks roads, roughly one mile east of State Route 85. It expanded by more than 300 acres overnight with wind gusts reaching 30 mph and is currently at 0% containment, according to Arizona’s Family. The fire has now reportedly spread across 980 acres.
Fire now pushing to the north and northeast, says fire crews
Officials say the fire has changed direction and is now moving north and northeast.
"Salt cedar burns very hot. It's flammable. It's oily. Therefore it's pushing up that large black plume of smoke. It does take a little bit longer to contain this type of fire as compared to like a grass fire down in southern Arizona," said Tiffany Davila of the Arizona Department of Forestry and Wildfire Management.
The fire is currently at 0% containment, according to Arizona’s Family.
